The naturalistic explanations have been in vogue from very ancient times, as the Kāṭhaka Samhitā VII 10 implies 'अहर्वावासीन्न रात्री सा यमी भ्रातरं मृतं नामृष्यत तां यदपृच्छन् यमि कहिं ते भ्रातामृतेत्यद्येत्येवाब्रवीत्'
