⁵⁰⁶ The four kinds of वाद्य were enumerated by भरत as 'ततं चैवावनद्धं च घनं सुषिरमेव च' and the अमरकोश illustrates them as follows : 'ततं वीणादिकं वाद्यमानद्धं मुरजादिकम् । वंशादिकं तु सुषिरं कांस्यतालादिकं घनम् ॥.'
