Some general rules concerning this topic may first be stated The first rule is that in a conflict between āśauca on death and āśauca on birth, that on death is stronger⁶⁵⁷ The 2nd rule is that if both āśaucas are of the same kind and the second is of the same duration or of lesser duration than the first then a man gets rid of both at the end of the first, but if the second, though of the same kind, has a longer duration than the first, then purification follows at the end of the one that is of longer duration. It has to be remembered that birth and death give rise to āśauca⁶⁵⁸ only when they are known by a person.
