¹⁰⁹⁵ The terms प्राचीनावीतिन्, यज्ञोपवीतिन् or उपवीतिन्, सव्यं and अपसव्यं occur almost at every step in the श्राद्धप्रयोग. They will be explained once for all here and instead of repeating lengthy translations the original Sanskrit words will be kept in the prayoga set out hereafter. Gobhila gr. I. 2 2-3, Khādiragr I. 1. 4-5 and Manu II. 63 define yajñopavītin or upavītin as one who suspends the sacrificial chord round his neck and raises the right arm so as to wear the chord on his left shoulder and prācīnāvītin as one who raises the left arm and wears the chord on his right shoulder Savya means left. Acc to गृह्याश्वलायन I 91 when the sacred chord hangs down from the left shoulder (and under the right arm) that is said to be ‘savyam’ and when the chord hangs down from the right shoulder (and under the left arm) that is अपसव्यम्
