It may be noted that religious suicide at Puruṣottama is referred to in Brahmapurāṇa.¹⁵⁸⁸ 'those who give up their body (life) in Puruṣottama-kṣetra after mounting up the Vaṭa tree or do so between the Vaṭa and the ocean reach without doubt mokṣa. A man abandoning life, either intentionally or unintentionally, either on his way to Puruṣottama or in the cemetery or in the country house (of Jagannātha) or in the streets (of Jagannātha) or even anywhere else there secures mokṣa. Therefore men desiring mokṣa should by all means give up life at that holy place'.
