Some people think that the image of Vithobā is really Buddhist or Jain. There is hardly any evidence for this. When such Marāthi poets and saints as Ekanātha, and Tukārām speak of Vithobā as Bauddhāvatāra they have Viṣṇu in mind,¹⁶³⁷ whose 9th avatāra was Buddha according to the Purāṇas and medieval writers.
