v6.c81.495
It is rather surprising that the passages quoted in the medieval works on Kṛṣṇajanmāṣṭamī are mostly borrowed from the Bhaviṣya, Bhaviṣyottara, Skanda, Viṣṇudharmottara, Nāradīya and Brahmavaivarta purāṇas, but hardly ever from the Bhāgavata-purāṇa which is the Veda of the Vaisnavas of later medieval and modern times. The description of Kṛṣṇa's birth in the Bhāgavata is vague and commonplace. All that³³³ is said there is that the time when Kṛṣṇa was born was endowed with all good characteristics and was very charming, that the quarters looked very clear and the sky was lit up by bright stars, that the wind that blew was very pleasing to the skin and laden with fine fragrance and that when Janārdana was born of Devakī it was midnight and darkness had enveloped everything.
