In Vedic times and in early smṛtis like those of Manu (II. 11) and Yāj. (I 53) it was difficult for a brotherless maiden to get married (vide H of Dh vol II p 435) But from this it is a far cry to say that the Bhrātṛdvitīyā owes its origin to this idea or practice.
