The characteristic sentences are 'A man of prayer regards what are known as physical calamities as divine chastisement alike for individuals and nations', 'A man like me cannot but believe that this earthquake is a divine chastisement sent by God for our sins' (vol 3 p 303), 'I share the belief with the whole world, civilized and uncivilized, that calamities such as the Bihar one come to mankind as chastisement for their sins' (*ibid.* p 305).
