¹⁹⁵² One circumstance which fixes the earliest limit of Kumārila't time is furnished by the *Kāśikā* (com. on Aṣṭādhyāyī). In the lengthy pūrvapakṣa against Grammar contained in the Tantravārtika on P. M. S. I. 3. 24 (from p. 254 onwards), on p. 260 an objection is raised that Pāṇini himself violates his own rules laid down in 'tṛjakābhyāṁ kartari' (Pāṇ. II. 2. 15) in the sūtras 'Janikartuḥ prakṛtiḥ' (Pāṇ. I. 4.30) and 'tatprayojako hetuśca' (Pāṇ. I 4. 55). The *Kāśikā* of Jayāditya and Vāmana defends the sūtra 'tatprayojako hetuśca' in the words 'तस्य प्रयोजकः तत्प्रयोजकः, निपानानात्सप्तम्यलुकः' (p 91 of Benares ed.). The पूर्वपक्षी in तन्त्रवार्तिक on p. 260 does not accept this explanation of the *Kāśikā* in the words: न चैषां निपातनेः साधुत्वसिद्धिः। From I-tsing's remarks it appears that Jayāditya died in or about 661 A. D. Therefore the Tantravārtika in which fault is found with *Kāśikā's* explanation must be later than about 650 A D.
