In the Arthaśāstra there are references to four classes of medical experts, viz. भिषजः or चिकित्सकः, i.e. ordinary physicians; जाङ्गलीविदः, i.e. those who could readily detect poison; गर्भाधिविज्ञा: or सूतिकाचिकित्सका:, i.e. midwives; and army surgeons and nurses.¹
