The rate of interest allowed by the Saṃhitās in the case of the Śūdra debtors, viz. 5 p.c. per month, corresponds with that given in the second passage of the Arthaśāstra (पञ्चपञ्चा व्यावहारिकी, p. 174, Bk. III): “पञ्चपञ्चा व्यावहारिकी”; and as the Saṃhitās apply the rule to unsecured loans, I am inclined to think that the passage of Kauṭilya mentions the maximum rate allowed in the case of unsecured loans.
