The legal rate² of interest for a money-lender, as mentioned in the Arthaśāstra, is 1¼ p.c. per month, i.e. 15 p.c. per year. For the reasons given below, it seems that this rate of interest was chargeable on secured debts, the maximum rate allowed on unsecured ones being prescribed
