In the following pages an attempt will be made to summarize the arguments which may be advanced in support of the traditional and widely current view that the *Arthaśāstra* of Kauṭilya is the work of Châṇakya, the Minister of Chandra Gupta, and therefore belongs to the fourth century B.C.
