The sources of supply of elephants in those days were the following places, viz.: (i) कलिंग, (ii) अङ्ग, (iii) करुष¹ (eastern portion of the district of Shahabad in Behar), supplying elephants of the best quality; (iv) प्राच्य (the east), (v) दशार्ण,² (vi) अपरान्त³ (western countries, viz. Konkan and Malabar), supplying elephants of medium quality; and (vii) सुराष्ट्र (Guzerat), (viii) पञ्चजन,¹ supplying elephants of inferior quality.
