An elephant stable was twice as high as the length of an elephant, and its width was half its height; it was made to face either the north or the east, had separate apartments for female elephants, had a spacious corridor (वीथी), and was provided with smooth, square, T-shaped tether-posts called कुमारी, which were as long as the length of an elephant, and between which were placed apertures for the removal of excreta. Their place for sleeping was similar to that for standing, with this difference, that in one half of it was a raised platform for the elephant to lean upon.
