Mention may be made here of the casting of the Tamilian characters and the introduction of printing in the Tamil country. The first book containing a summary of the Christian doctrine was printed in 1577 by the letters having been cast by the Jesuit lay Brother Giovanni (Joa) Gonslaves. Fr. De Souza while describing how these early printings were received by the people says: “Those countries were marvelling at the new invention, and pagans as well as Christians tried to obtain these printed books and prized them highly.”³³
