The Jātaka knows that Vāsudeva was a scion of the royal family—the Yādava, Sātvata or Vṛṣṇi of the Purāṇas—of Mathurā—Uttara Madhurā.¹⁰ The existence of a city named Asitañjanā and a separate district of Kaṃsa is unknown to other sources.¹¹
