² In J. III, p. 80, G. 89 addresses the king as ‘Brahmadatta’, while the following 90 and 91—address him as ‘the lord of the Pañcālas’; in J., V, pp. 102 ff, from G. 316 onwards the two forms—Pañcāla and Brahmadatta—recur alternatively, and one gāthā—322—has the two forms together—“garayho brahme Pañcālo Brahmadattasya rājino.” The mention of the ‘hundred Brahmadattas’ in the Epic and the Purāṇas, to be intelligible, must include these Pañcāla Brahmadattas: Se MBH., II, 8, 23; Matsya P., 273, 71; Raychudhury, P.
