The nucleus of the story, as related in this charming balladic *Jātaka*, centres round Vessantara. He was a great donator. He was banished from the kingdom by the Sivi people for having given away a highly-prized elephant to the Brāhmaṇas of Kaliṅga. He, with his wife Maddī and the two children, Jāli and Kaṇhā, went to a forest and lived as a hermit. Afterwards he was reinstated on the throne of Sivi.
