Loans and usury are as old as the Vedic times and perhaps much older. Ṛṇam or debt is repeatedly mentioned, from the Ṛgveda onwards, having apparently been a normal condition among the Vedic Indians;³ the Law-Books⁴ and the Kauṭilīya⁵ are of course much more elaborate on the subject.
