*Pāli*, in the form, more or less, in which these stories are written, was most probably the common language of the people, though *Samskrta* may have been spoken among the more literate and cultured class, and there may have been different dialects also, as we discern from the specific mention of the *Candāla-bhāsā*.¹⁰
