The Agrahāra was, however, the more usual term to indicate settlement of learned Brāhmans. It seems to have been a body corporate with its own means of maintenance, granted to it by generous donors, and powers of self-government. It started as an independent body as regards its resources and internal control. The administration of the Agrahāra vested in its Sabhā. Proceedings of some of these Sabhās are recorded in the inscriptions (*Ep. Car.*, vol. IX, pp. 127–132).
