**Caste.** Kauṭilya preserves the tradition that the army could be recruited from all the castes, Brāhmaṇa, Kshatriya, Vaiśya, and Śūdra. But Kauṭilya does not think much of Brāhmaṇa soldiers, as they are forgiving to the prostrate enemy. The Kshatriya soldiers are more proficient in the military arts. The other classes of soldiers are useful for their strength of number [IX. 2].
