This is a description of the first *Āśrama* of life, that of the Brahmachārī, followed by that of the householder. Only there is a mistake in taking the period of studentship at 37 years, which is exceptional and is the limit contemplated by Manu [III. 1]. Here Megasthenes also shows his ignorance of the Hindu division of life into four *āśramas*.
