We also read of gold (*hiraṇya*) being obtained from the beds of rivers like the Indus [*Rv.* X, 75, 8], or extracted from the earth [*Av.* XII, 1, 6, 26. 44] or from ore by smelting [*Śata Br.* VI, 1, 3, 5] or from washings [*Ib.* II, 1, 1, 5].
