The oldest variety has been found in the parts of India in the northwest which belonged to the Achaemenian Persian empire in the sixth and fifth century B.C. Some of these coins were found in an early layer at Taxila along with a gold coin of Diodotus (250 B.C.), and, in another stratum, with the coins of Alexander the Great, looking “fresh from the mint,” and one Achaemenid *siglos* of the 4th Century B.C. These weigh, as we have seen, 100 *ratis*=180 grains on an average. The *sigloi* weighs 86.45 grains, while the Attic standard=67.5 grains.
