Massaga, for instance, was built up as a fort commanding great natural advantages on an eminence inaccessible on all sides against steep rock, treacherous morass, deep stream, and a rampart guarded by a deep moat to boot. The rampart was "*35 stadia* (=about 4 miles) in circumference, with a basis of *stone-work* supporting a superstructure of unburnt, sun-dried bricks. The brick-work was bound into a solid fabric by means of stones" [*Ib.* p. 195 (Curtins)].
