**Village Public Works.** A village had its full complement of public works of utility and social institutions. It had its *ārāmas* (rest-houses), *prapā*, (tanks), *sattras* (alms-houses), *puṇyasthānas* (holy spots), *chaityas* (trees for worship), *deva-grihas* (temples), and its halls of public amusements such as music, dancing, theatrical performances (*prekshā*) and also for public dinners [*pravahaṇa*, III. 10].
