From Prayāga to Pāṭaliputra. 11. From Pāṭaliputra to the mouth of the Ganges probably at Tāmralipti. Every mile of the road was marked by a stone indicating the by-roads and the distances. The road was in charge of the officers of the P.W.D. who were responsible for its up-keep, repairs, and for erection of mile-stones and sign-posts at every ten stadia (Pliny, *Natural History*, VI, 21).
