The *Uttarāpatha* of Pāṇini must have been the first or the second of above routes. It may be noted that Chandragupta Maurya's conquest of these regions by which the boundaries of his empire were practically extended up to Persia must have resulted in an increase of India's trade with the west along these routes. Within India, this overland trade-route (*Uttarāpatha*) must have passed through and linked up her chief cities mentioned by Pāṇini and Patañjali, such as Bālhīka, Kāpaiśī, Pushkalāvatī Maśakāvatī, Takshaśilā, Śākala, Hastināpura, Kośāmbī, Kāśī and Pāṭaliputra.
