It may be noted that the traditional names of five Provinces into which India was divided are mentioned in the *Purāṇas* as
(1) *Udīchya* (Northern India) or Uttarāpatha.
(2) *Madhya-deśa* (Central India).
(3) *Prāchya* (Eastern India)
(4) Aparānta (Western India) and
(5) *Dakshiṇāpatha* (Deccan and South India).
