¹ See Rhys Davids, Preface to the Dialogues of the Buddha (Sacred Books of the Buddhists, Vol. II) pp. ix—xxii. Rhys Davids and Oldenberg referred the Vinaya and the Sutta Piṭakas to about the 4th century B.C., Sacred Books of the East Series, Vol. XIII, p. xxiii; Vol. XI, p. x. But the tendency of later research is against so early a date. See the Literary History of Sanskrit Buddhism (from Winternitz, Sylvain Levi, Huber), by G. K. Nariman. Sylvain Levi holds that the Vinaya of the Sanskrit canon was first codified in the third or fourth century after Christ (p. 9). In Sanskrit works Pâli expressions and titles naturally appear in Sanskrit form.
