The correct Sanskrit spelling of the author's name is Kautalya as in Munich and Madras Mss., not Kautilya which, unfortunately, has been accepted by many writers. See the Indian Historical Review, 1925, pp. 569, 786. Kautalya, not Kautilya, occurs in an inscription of Vikrama Era, 1291, recently discovered in Gujarata. Kautalya is also called Chāṇakya or Viṣṇugupta.
