In Kautalya, there is no regular department of education. But learning is patronised by both regular and spasmodic stipends to teachers and scholars. Some of them draw emoluments ranging from five hundred to a thousand paṇas a year.² Many musicians receive two hundred and fifty paṇas a year.³
