² Parāśara is an old name in Sanskrit literature. He is the seer of some Vedic hymns and is called the son of Vasiṣṭha and Sakti in the Ṛigveda (I, 65—73). He appears in the Mahābhārata, in Yājñavalkya and in the Viṣṇu Purāṇa. The Smṛiti, however, which goes by his name, is one of the latest. There is a still later work, Parāśarīya Dharma Śāstram, highly tinged with sectarianism which must be pronounced a late expansion of his Smṛiti. Parāśara deals almost exclusively with Āchāra and Prāyaśchitta.
