¹ Bühler placed Vijñâneśwara in the 14th century, but as Basu points out (Preface to his translation, xix), the commentator quotes from Mâdhava, the great minister of the Vijayanagara empire, and cannot be anterior to the 14th century. The Mitâkṣarâ, as his commentary is called, bears traces of Buddhist influence.
