The Smṛitis were composed in different parts of the country. Manu belongs to the Gangetic plains, Nārada probably to Nepāl and Yājñavalkya probably to Mithilā, in modern Bihār. But as with the Sūtras, the difference of locality matters only in details. The Smṛitis are attached to different Vedic Schools but on the whole they treat of law, social affairs and politics in the same fashion. The Padma Purāṇa, indeed, classifies Smṛitis into Sātwika, Rājasika and Tāmasika¹ but their political ideas would fall only under one category.
