The consecration of kings in the Mahâbhârata is conducted, on the whole, according to the procedure laid down in the Brâhmaṇas and Sûtras but a few additional touches are given. The king-designate ‘worships’ his ministers.³ Elsewhere he promises that by thought, word and deed he would protect the earth and religion and that he would observe the precepts of Ethics, Law and Politics in his conduct.⁴ To the consecration of Yudhiṣṭhira, Brâhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas and respectable Śûdras are invited.⁵
