² Jacobi, Das Râmâyaṇa. Macdonell, History of Sanskrit Literature, 302-11. Griffith, Appendix to his Abridged Translation of the Râmâyaṇa. Keith, J. R. A. S., 1915, pp. 318-28. The statements of Dischrysontonius (50-117 A.D.), and Philostratus (170 or 180 A.D.), that Homer's poetry was sung in India (Eggeling, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Vol. 21, 9th edition, p. 281) can refer only to the Râmâyaṇa and not to the Mahâbhârata as was once supposed. The Râmâyaṇa consists of 24,000 Ślokas and has come down in three distinct recensions, (1) the Bengal, (2) the Bombay and (3) the West Indian.
