The absence of a hereditary principle of succession had its usual drawbacks, but it was responsible for the fact that quite a number of brilliant men can be counted among the sultans of Dehli. It was by no means easy to occupy the throne of a state placed in such difficult circumstances. Fools and mere pleasure-seekers could not be tolerated for long, because the sultanate required all the care and work that a man could give it. The rough and ready methods of selecting the sultan worked well and proved successful in finding the right man at the right time.
