Two of the greatest commentary writers lived in the ninth century. The first is Medhātithi⁵ (c 850 A.C.) celebrated for his commentary on Manu. The author was probably an inhabitant of Kashmir as Bühler suggested. Jolly considered him to be a Southerner. Medhātithi knows of a *Vārttā* treatise by Brihaspati and is familiar with the *Artha* treatises of Brihaspati, Uśanas and Kauṭalya. He is the author of an original *Smriti* work also, namely, the *Smritiviveka*.
