Bengal's⁸ contribution to law during the eleventh century is mentionable. Jitendriya (c 1050), author of an original work on *Smriti*, was an inhabitant of Bengal. He is quoted by Jīmūtavāhana in *Kālaviveka* as well as *Dāyabhāga* but is eclipsed by him. The *Dāyabhāga* doctrine that the widow succeeds to her deceased husband's estate has been traced to Jitendriya.
