"The political literature of the Hindus was known to Abul Fazl, who in *Ayeen 'Akbari* has given a short synopsis of probably some of the *nīti śāstras* in his possession in the chapter on the various branches of learning cultivated by the people of Hindusthan ruled by his master, the great Akbar. Besides giving an elaborate description of Hindu law under the heading *beyhar* (*Sans.* *vyavahāra*) and referring to ‘many other sensible books upon government’ the compiler of this Moghul Gazetteer gives the following summary of *Rājneet*, ‘the art of governing a kingdom :’
