Sorokin is convinced that the consciousness about the importance of "economic factors" in human behaviour, social organization and the historical destiny of a society did not originate with Marx and Engels but that it can be traced back to "immemorial times." Among the ancient representatives of this kind of thought he finds Buddha, Viṣṇu, Manu, Nārada, *Vedānta-Sūtras*, Brihaspati, Gautama and Āpastamba in the company of Confucius and Mencius of China, and Thucydides, Plato and Aristotle of Greece, as well as Cicero, Livy and Pliny of Rome (pp. 514-515).
