Vedic literature may be conveniently although somewhat arbitrarily taken to be a literature of nearly a thousand years from, say, 1500-1200 B.C. i.e. the epoch of the Bharatas, the Tritsus and the Yadus etc., to the beginnings of Jainism and Buddhism, say, c. 600 B.C.² i.e. to the powerful kingdoms of Kāsī, Kośala, Magadha, and so forth. This is an extensive period and the literature indicates the rise and fall of myriads of races or tribes as well as the gradual submission of virtually the whole of Northern India to Vedic institutions and ideas.
