‘A’ *l. 5*: *arthaśauśamum ātmaśauśamum uḍaiyarāy*: “possesses honest earnings and has a pure mind” (Venkayya). The expressions employed here are clearly reminiscent of the *upadhāśauca* of the Arthaśāstra literature, though in the context they seem to be used in a rather loose non-technical sense. Perhaps, ‘possessing material and spiritual purity’ is a better rendering. Reference may also be made to the *Tiru-kkuṟal* verse 501.
