‘A’ line 1: *sabhaiyōm*. Venkayya recognised the existence of village assemblies before the date of this record and drew attention to some earlier inscriptions mentioning village assemblies.* Perhaps the earliest mention of the Sabhā of Uttaramērūr itself is that found in No. 80 of 1898 of the seventh year of Dantivikramavarman (c. A. D. 782)† Of about the same period is the Pāṇḍya record from Mānūr in the Tinnevelly District (No. 423 of 1906) which in some important respects seems to anticipate the records of Parāntaka Cōḷa by more than a century.‡
