hostile Viḷiñam, in Kollam, in Koṅgam, in invincible Iraṭṭa and in Oṭṭa (Oḍra), with the result that different kings were forced to flee these countries without (hope of) returning (to them)’. The slightest acquaintance with the nature of our sources is enough to show that here we have a mixture of history and epic in which history is present in a larger proportion than is usual in such cases. At the same time, we can attach no historical importance to the order in which the countries are named in this passage, as that is obviously determined by metrical exigencies.
