We see then that there is no dependable evidence in early Tamil literature on Karikāla’s conquest of Kāñcī; rather the testimony of the Perumbāṇārruppaḍai is just the other way, that Kāñcī was in Karikāla’s time under the rule of Iḷandiraiyan who is not once stated anywhere in this literature to have stood in subordinate relation to Karikāla. The first direct statement on Karikāla’s relation to Kāñcī is made by the Tiruvālaṅgāḍu plates of the sixth year of Rājēndra Cōḻa I in the 11th century A. D., and even then the other Cōḻa plates of the time say nothing about it.
